HEKS/EPER is making a difference in the «Early learning support and parent education» in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is rich in natural resources. Yet there is considerable poverty in the society. Moreover, bad governance and strife have rendered the social and political situation highly unstable. The crime rate is high and violence against women is rife. Land conflicts lead repeatedly to violence and ethnic tensions. HEKS/EPER is playing a part in conflict prevention and resolution and assists farming families in securing their right to own land and in boosting agricultural output.

Facts

In 2017, some 19000 people living in a conflict-ridden environment were reached through peace initiatives or protective measures.

Mothers and fathers who speak a foreign language often lack information about how best to prepare their children for kindergarten and school. In the regions of Basel Stadt/Baselland and Western Switzerland, HEKS/EPER supports foreign language-speaking mothers and fathers with practical ideas for the targeted stimulation of their infants so as to develop their motor, cognitive, language and social skills. In addition, parents learn about family-oriented facilities such as playgrounds and family and cultural centres. They also get to meet other families, thereby becoming better socially networked. In Berne and Eastern Switzerland, HEKS/EPER also offers German language courses geared to mothers and their preschool children.
