HEKS/EPER is making a difference in the «Social inclusion» in Venezuela

Venezuela’s basic supply systems have partially collapsed as a result of the political crisis, hyperinflation and international embargoes. An estimated 10 to 12 million Venezuelans lack proper access to food (source: OCHA 2020) and 7 million people need humanitarian aid (source: UN 2019). Water-borne diseases are again on the rise and child and infant mortality has skyrocketed (source: WHO 2019). HEKS/EPER is providing emergency aid for some 18,700 people, including warm meals and toiletries for needy women and children as well as the elderly. Like all the other countries in the region, Venezuela too has been hit by covid-19. To halt the spread of the disease, hospitals actively support disinfection projects, while toiletries and food packages are distributed to those adversely affected by the crisis. With the financial backing of Swiss Solidarity, HEKS/EPER also supports internal migrants living in extremely precarious circumstances on the border with Colombia and who receive no government support at all.

Ever more people are being excluded because of their social background, ethnicity, age, gender or religion. Integrating people with a migration background can be compounded, for example, by the lack of the requisite language proficiency, ignorance of Switzerland's cultural specificities or by disadvantages on the job market. HEKS/EPER works actively to ensure that the affected people have access to education, work, government programmes and services. But integration is incumbent on society as a whole, which calls for openness as well as regulatory structures that ensure the right of social participation for all. This implies that everyone has the same rights and opportunities and that features such as gender, age, social background, nationality or religion do not give rise to discrimination.
