HEKS/EPER is making a difference in the «Employment and income» in Honduras

Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. Some 65 per cent of its people live in extreme poverty. Neglect of the rural population is the main cause of the continuing exodus of people to cities and to other countries. Yet many have not yet lost hope of a better future in Honduras. With great commitment and creativity they are striving in village communities for a better future. HEKS/EPER supports them in improving agricultural output, in safeguarding natural resources and in the defence human rights. Because Honduras is regularly hit by natural disasters, HEKS/EPER also promotes disaster resilience.

Facts

HEKS/EPER support enabled 3600 small farming families to boost their production and 3450 to increase their incomes in 2020. Altogether 1100 farmers are now producing with local seeds adapted to climate change and 1500 people gained access to drinking water.

Agriculture and small businesses are the basis of employment and income in rural areas. HEKS/EPER specifically promotes products and businesses that are profitable for the local population. Of pivotal importance here are good professional training and people's ability to run their businesses successfully or to survive on the open labour market. HEKS/EPER therefore teams up with authorities, business people and the private sector to organize basic and advanced training programmes. HEKS/EPER also militates for fair working conditions and wages.
