HEKS/EPER is making a difference in the «Agricultural production and market systems» in Ethiopia
Despite Ethiopia's progress in combatting hunger and poverty, the country is frequently threatened by severe drought and hunger crises owing to climate change and soil overuse. HEKS/EPER and its local partner organizations are helping some 55 000 rural dwellers to improve their access to drinking water, develop sustainable farming methods, promote biodiversity and strengthen their resilience in times of drought or flooding. To secure access to natural resources, HEKS/EPER plans to step up cooperation with specialized Ethiopian organizations and networks and launch activities in new regions. People will also receive greater support in claiming their rights vis-a-vis the authorities.
In 2020 HEKS/EPER upgraded drinking water systems for some 15 000 people and facilitated access to sanitary facilities and drinking water for three schools. Some 2260 beekeepers were able to enhance the quality, versatility and output of their honey. In the country's southern Borana region, HEKS/EPER has mounted a range of activities to support some 266 000 people whose crops were destroyed by locusts and drought.
HEKS/EPER is active primarily in rural areas, where prosperity and quality of life for the poorest are closely bound up with properly functioning agriculture. This is often not the case, however, as depleted soil, poor transport routes or lacking know-how hamper profitable agricultural production. HEKS/EPER helps people engage in profitable and ecological agriculture. This calls for sustainable production techniques and a great diversity of products so as to be able to react to environmental risks and market changes. In order that produce can be marketed successfully, HEKS/EPER enhances smallholders' knowledge of the market and militates for market systems in which smallholders are able to survive. In so doing HEKS/EPER mediates between producing, processing and subcontracting enterprises.
