HEKS/EPER is making a difference in the «Agricultural production and market systems» in Lebanon

According to UNHCR there are 996 000 registered Syrian refugees in Lebanon. This is equivalent to a quarter of Lebanon's population. There is great hardship and distress in the refugee camps located in the two Beirut districts of Shatila and Borj el Borajne. Supported by Swiss Solidarity and the Waldensian Church in Italy, HEKS/EPER provides since 2015 emergency aid for Syrian refugees and host families. As part of inter-church cooperation, HEKS/EPER also supports Protestant Church projects in Beirut designed to promote church life in communities, strengthen the social responsibility of churches for the entire population, initiate dialogue between representatives of different churches, and assist children of refugee families and migrant workers through afternoon schools and leisure programmes.

Facts

In 2019, cash-for-work projects sponsored by HEKS/EPER provided 800 refugees with the wherewithal to buy food and medicines and pay rent. Living quarters for 84 families were renovated. Church-based partner organizations are securing the inclusion of 80 refugee children in the educational system.

HEKS/EPER is active primarily in rural areas, where prosperity and quality of life for the poorest are closely bound up with properly functioning agriculture. This is often not the case, however, as depleted soil, poor transport routes or lacking know-how hamper profitable agricultural production. HEKS/EPER helps people engage in profitable and ecological agriculture. This calls for sustainable production techniques and a great diversity of products so as to be able to react to environmental risks and market changes. In order that produce can be marketed successfully, HEKS/EPER enhances smallholders' knowledge of the market and militates for market systems in which smallholders are able to survive. In so doing HEKS/EPER mediates between producing, processing and subcontracting enterprises.
