HEKS/EPER is making a difference in the «Security and rights» in Cambodia
Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia. It is still marked by the negative consequences of the "Khmer Rouge" regime. Authoritarian rule and a weak democracy are hampering economic development. Agriculture provides a livelihood for some 80 per cent of the population and still has enormous potential for development. Through a broad-based country aid strategy, HEKS/EPER and its partner organizations are working to secure the livelihoods of Cambodian smallholder families and boost their autonomy. This involves several complementary projects to improve agricultural output and foster peaceful coexistence in society.
Thanks to HEKS/EPER, 2019 witnessed the peaceful resolution of 20 conflicts over land and resources, some of them after long periods. As a result, 3600 people obtained access to water, a factor also crucial to agriculture. HEKS/EPER promotes market access for small agricultural producers, and this enabled 51 per cent of 1420 families to increase their income.
Economic and social advancement is sustainable only when people can participate freely and actively. Civil and human rights are under pressure in many places, however. Many people's room for manoeuvre is being drastically restricted. People who stand up for their rights and those of others face exclusion and put their lives at risk. HEKS/EPER therefore empowers, networks and protects people and grassroots organisations that non-violently defend co-determination and rights. HEKS/EPER helps local people better understand their rights and encourages dialogue between population, government and business sector at the local, national and international levels.
