In a region marked by long-standing conflicts, HEKS/EPER is keen to foster peace based on justice and respect for human rights. The latter have been drastically curtailed as a result of the strife and this is hampering a permanent peace settlement. HEKS/EPER backs civil society players that are working by non-violent means to overcome the current conflicts and prevailing inequality. To this end, a network of local and international organizations is being forged in order to achieve a just and human rights-based peace settlement. Under the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI), HEKS/EPER also works to enhance the protection of the civilian population through the deployment of international human rights observers. HEKS/EPER also undertakes awareness-raising in Switzerland.
