HEKS/EPER is making a difference in Iraq

The brutal, three years-long battle against Islamic State in Iraq has displaced millions of Iraqis internally. HEKS/EPER has been providing humanitarian aid in Iraq's Kurdish region since 2014. Between 2014 and 2018, HEKS/EPER and its partner organizations «REACH» and «Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe» supported displaced people and local Kurdish smallholder families in improving their food security. The focus in 2019 was on supporting the return of refugees to their home regions in Iraq. Particularly vulnerable families in the Kirkuk region received financial aid in 2020. As of 2021, HEKS/EPER has been stepping up its efforts to offer new economic prospects to returnees.

HEKS/EPER in Iraq

Facts

Some two million persons displaced by Islamic State still live in camps or with host families. Despite having had to scale back its activities in 2020, HEKS/EPER supported roughly 100 families through direct payments to enable them to buy food and medicines. A new project was launched in 2021 designed to secure food supplies for 1800 people.
