HEKS/EPER is making a difference in the «Access to land and resources» in Palestine-Israel
In a region marked by long-standing conflicts, HEKS/EPER is striving to promote peace based on justice and respect for human rights. The latter have been drastically curtailed as a result of the strife and this is hampering a permanent peace settlement. HEKS/EPER supports civil society players that are working, by non-violent means, to overcome the current conflicts and inequality. To this end, a network of local and international organizations is being forged in order to achieve a just, human rights-based peace settlement. Under the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI), HEKS/EPER also works to enhance the protection of the civilian population through the use of international human rights observers. HEKS/EPER carries out awareness-raising activities in Switzerland.
In 2019, nine partner organisations committed to direct dialogue between various groups. Among other things, this enabled them peacefully to open up access to land in five areas, whether for agriculture, rights of transit or for cultural facilities.
HEKS/EPER sent eight volunteers as human rights monitors, principally to ensure greater safety for school children.
Rural communities need unimpeded access to natural resources such as land, water, pastures, savannahs or forests if they are to develop. The possibility to use these resources is critical to fighting hunger and poverty. Agriculture is, after all, the most important source of income for many rural communities. With crop farming, small plantations, livestock rearing, fishing or gathering they can secure their food supply and generate income by selling their produce. Land also serves communities as living space and reinforces cultural and spiritual identity. Many rural communities still lack access to land or risk losing it despite existing or traditional law. HEKS/EPER therefore helps them, through numerous projects, to secure long-term access to land and resources, both practically and legally.
