HEKS/EPER is making a difference in the «Security and rights» in the South Caucasus

In the South Caucasus HEKS/EPER is active in Georgia and Armenia. It strives to foster peaceful coexistence and improve living conditions in rural areas through income-generating activities and by strengthening civil society. To boost their crop yields and incomes, smallholders broaden their knowledge of organic farming and improve their access to infrastructure, micro-credit and markets. Besides, to strengthen social cohesion, HEKS/EPER supports its partner organizations in building a network which, in collaboration with opinion leaders, media and civil society organizations, provides members with unbiased information about politics, society and the ongoing conflicts in the South Caucasus.

HEKS/EPER in the South Caucasus

Facts

Thanks to HEKS/EPER support provided in South Caucasus, 53 per cent of the 5000 fruit and milk producers were able to increase their yields. About 66 per cent were even able to increase their incomes, in part by securing better market prices. A total of 700 young people participated in peace workshops.

Economic and social advancement is sustainable only when people can participate freely and actively. Civil and human rights are under pressure in many places, however. Many people's room for manoeuvre is being drastically restricted. People who stand up for their rights and those of others face exclusion and put their lives at risk. HEKS/EPER therefore empowers, networks and protects people and grassroots organisations that non-violently defend co-determination and rights. HEKS/EPER helps local people better understand their rights and encourages dialogue between population, government and business sector at the local, national and international levels.
