Socially marginalized as well as undocumented (Sans papiers) people are often deprived of competent legal assistance. Many are also overwhelmed in dealing with authorities and coping with numerous laws, and are thus unable to claim or protect their rights. They need someone of trust to whom they can turn. Lawyers from the Aargau Legal Advice Office for the Socially Disadvantaged advise people experiencing poverty and help them take the first steps toward self-help. Undocumented people are also informed of their rights and assisted in administrative matters such as taking out health insurance or legalizing their residency status. Contacts with social institutions are facilitated and information provided about networking structures, school enrolment for children and post-school vocational training opportunities.
