HEKS/EPER provides emergency aid in Lebanon

HEKS provides emergency aid in Lebanon

More than a million people have been displaced in Lebanon, where fighting between Hezbollah and Israeli forces has been escalating since October 2024. Around 421,000 of them have crossed the northern border into Syria. Many of these displaced people were forced to flee on foot and could not take anything with them. Together with the local partner organisation ‘Najdeh’, HEKS/EPER is initially providing the displaced families with food, mattresses and blankets.

Since the outbreak of war in Israel and Palestine in October 2023, the fighting between Hizbollah and the Israeli army in the border area with Lebanon has intensified. The civilian population living there is virtually defenceless against this new escalation. Over a million people have been forced to flee their homes and seek shelter in other regions. The humanitarian emergency is further exacerbated by the severe economic and financial crisis in Lebanon.

In Lebanon, HEKS/EPER continues to support displaced families and, in collaboration with the local partner organisation Najdeh, distributes food, mattresses and blankets in Tyre, Sidon and Beirut. Around 1400 families have received support so far. Cash assistance for the most vulnerable is also being expanded.

HEKS/EPER has also launched an emergency WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) programme for Lebanese refugees in Syria, particularly in two informal shelters in the Church of St. Mary and the Monastery of Mar Elias in Homs.

These shelters accommodate 83 and 172 people respectively. The most important measures include the repair of water and sanitation facilities to prevent the outbreak of disease, the installation of additional water tanks and the installation of solar-powered lighting systems to ensure safety and reduce the risk of exposure, especially at night. Given the urgent need for clean water and sanitation in the overcrowded shelters, this measure is crucial.

HEKS/EPER continues to support the displaced population and emphasises the importance of donations in order to continue providing life-saving services.
